TAPROOT FIBRE LAB / NOVA SCOTIA LINEN

Our spinning mill specializes in linen and wool fibres.

NOVA SCOTIA LINEN

Grown in Port Williams Nova Scotia at TapRoot Farms our linen products are made from hand harvested, dew retted flax. Processed using our TapRoot Fibre Lab Breaker and Scutcher and further processed using Belfast Mini Mills Separator and Carding Machines. We are pleased to offer 2 ply and single ply yarn, clean tow, hackled long line linen, flax seeds and shive.

One of the great benefits to working with flax is that all parts of the plant are useful including: seeds for planting or consumption, shive for animal bedding and garden mulch.

Our linen yarns reflect the soil and the conditions of season in which the flax was grown and retted. Each batch is unique. Our linen yarns tend to be a bit coarse to the touch at first but after a few washes it softens. Our linen yarns are well suited for wash cloths, tea towels, towels, runners, placemats, sweaters and visual art pieces. It also provides attractive contrasts and textures in hooking pieces.

NOVA SCOTIA WOOL

We are currently spinning a wide range of yarns with wool from Nova Scotia farms. From lace weight to super bulky there are various colours, dyed and natural, to choose from. We are always looking to source more wool. Please contact us if you have quality fibre wool available.

On our own farm we have 30 sheep for wool. We want to support a diverse landscape in Nova Scotia with various breeds of sheep on it. The wool from our farm is sold as One Sheep One Fleece One Yarn, an entire bundle of yarn from one sheep each season. We hope this will provide awareness but also inspiration. Each sheep is unique and so is the yarn from it.

CANADIAN WOOL

We have learned that our customers appreciate consistency and uniformity, something our Nova Scotia Wool collection is not able to easily be. Therefore we purchase wool from the Canadian Wool Cooperative to spin and dye. We are making 1 ply lace, 2 ply sport, 3 ply worsted, and 1 ply bulky weight yarns.
